Benzene comes from tar. It is known to cause cancer (specifically leukemia).Tar comes from petroleum refinement. GASCO (which became NW Natural Gas) dumped a lot of tar into pits that got covered up by dirt in the 90's. The tar began leaching Benzene and other toxic chemical compounds into the river. In 2006 the EPA made them clean up. They dug out 15,000 cubic yards of tar from the bottom of the river. There was 365 ppm Benzene in the earth around the site and 17 ppm Benzene in the water (including groundwater).
